CarPlay has significantly improved its functionality, especially with integration of apps like Car Scanner and MyRadar on touch screen car displays. This review explores the performance and usability of these apps in a real-world driving scenario.
Seamless App Integration in CarPlay
Testing revealed that both Car Scanner and MyRadar function seamlessly in CarPlay while the vehicle is in motion. Using MyRadar for weather monitoring alongside Apple Maps for navigation proved to be a convenient combination. Although the MyRadar map lacks detailed street-level zoom, its functionality remained unaffected. Switching between active CarPlay apps like MyRadar and Apple Maps can be achieved through Siri voice commands or by manually accessing the app list via the touch screen. For safety, manual app switching should be performed while the vehicle is stationary or by a passenger.
Connecting and Reconnecting Car Scanner
Initially, connecting the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth device required a direct connection to the iPhone, as it wouldn’t connect directly to the truck’s Lightning touch screen. After establishing the initial connection on the iPhone, Car Scanner could then connect via CarPlay on the touch screen. A temporary disconnect occurred during a brief stop with the engine off; CarPlay didn’t automatically reconnect upon restarting. Reactivating CarPlay on the iPhone resolved this issue, allowing Car Scanner to reconnect and display on the truck’s touch screen.
Real-Time Data and Performance with Car Scanner
Driving with Car Scanner displaying real-time data like speed and engine torque on the touch screen showcased its impressive performance. Data updates were instantaneous without any noticeable lag. Monitoring the 12-volt battery’s State of Charge (SOC) revealed interesting insights. During a short trip (under 10 miles), the SOC increased from 77% to 84% with the HVDC-LVDC converter consistently charging at 40-42 amps. This highlighted the efficiency of the charging system even during short trips.
Hands-Free App Switching with Siri
Further testing with the vehicle parked demonstrated the seamless hands-free app switching capabilities within CarPlay. Using voice commands to Siri, switching between Car Scanner, MyRadar, and Apple Maps was effortless and reliable. Each app resumed its previous state, demonstrating a robust and user-friendly experience.
Enhanced CarPlay Functionality
The enhanced functionality of CarPlay, particularly its integration with Touch Screen Car Scanners like Car Scanner, provides a significant improvement in user experience. The ability to monitor real-time vehicle data, access navigation, and track weather information seamlessly while driving enhances both convenience and safety. The hands-free control offered through Siri further elevates the driving experience.
