The tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in 2014 sparked a global investigation. A key piece of evidence was a Buk missile launcher, allegedly linked to the incident. Examining available footage and images raises questions about the launcher’s movements and location, specifically focusing on where it was filmed being transported.
A video released by the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs purportedly shows the Buk missile launcher being transported to Russia. However, verifying the time and location of this footage has been challenging. Notably, the launcher in the video is missing at least one missile. Previously, the same launcher was reportedly sighted outside of Snizhne, Ukraine, heading south, but not yet loaded onto a transporter.
Another photograph, initially believed to have been taken in Snizhne, actually depicts the launcher in Torez, Ukraine. Geolocation efforts, aided by older video footage of the area, confirm the Torez location. This footage showcases distinct features like yellow signage on a market building and unique markings on another structure, matching the background of the photograph.
Interestingly, the truck in this photograph appears identical to the one transporting the launcher in the video allegedly showing its movement towards Russia. Several distinguishing features match, including: red loading ramps slightly shorter than the Buk; a yellow and red side panel on the truck; and a white cabin with a blue stripe.
While the matching truck strongly suggests a connection, it raises questions about the sequence of events. Why would the launcher be driven under its own power out of Snizhne, then loaded onto the truck outside of town for transport across the border? This raises the possibility that the launch site was south of Snizhne. If so, was that location within range of MH17’s flight path?
Ultimately, the filming locations of the Buk missile launcher provide crucial clues in the MH17 investigation. Analyzing these locations, along with the timeline of events, is essential in understanding the tragedy. As more information emerges, hopefully, a clearer picture of what transpired will develop.
