Scirocco 16v: Electrical Repairs and Future Upgrades

After several weeks dedicated to troubleshooting and fixing wiring issues on my Scirocco 16v, I’m happy to report significant progress. Addressing primary earth connections and cleaning up various connections has resolved most electrical problems. Everything is now functional except for the wipers, which required a new motor (currently on order).

Last month’s work on the instrument cluster paid off, with the MFA stalks and the front lights and indicators now operating correctly. The solution mainly involved cleaning wires and replacing a few cables. I even reassembled the air vent flap and fan motor cover in the engine bay.

With the electrical gremlins largely vanquished, I can finally focus on reassembling the dashboard and tackling a brake refresh next month. Some brake parts have already arrived, fueling my enthusiasm for this next phase.

Regarding suspension, I currently have aftermarket coilovers installed only on the rear, while the front retains the OEM setup. I’m looking to upgrade the front suspension and am seeking recommendations for a good OEM or OEM-plus setup that allows for a slight lowering compared to the stock ride height.

The cluster, featuring a new motherboard, screen, and LEDs, now works flawlessly with the MFA stalks. Fixing a few microscopic copper line connections on the back of the cluster, discovered with the help of magnifying glasses, resolved several lingering issues.

The images below highlight the minute copper trace repairs on the cluster circuit board. These imperfections were invisible to the naked eye.

The front lights are now shining bright thanks to cleaned wiring and a few new bulbs.

The heater control unit, a fully rebuilt unit sourced from another Scirocco enthusiast, is now installed and functioning perfectly.

Successfully reinstalled the fan covers and connected them to the heater unit. The system now effectively draws in outside air.

Testing confirmed the old wiper motor was indeed defunct, necessitating replacement.

The Scirocco 16v is running smoothly after consistent starting and short drives over the past few weeks. Next month’s maintenance will include fresh oil, an oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, and new leads. I’ll also inspect and replace any damaged or potentially leaking rubber hoses.
