After owning multiple Mk7 Golfs over nine years, including GTIs, a Golf R, and a Golf SE, totaling 90,000 miles, we recently transitioned to the Mk8 GTI platform. This review, inspired by our firsthand experience, provides insights for the Mk8 Gti Forum community. We’ll compare the Mk7 and Mk8, focusing on driving dynamics, performance, interior, and overall impressions.
Mk8 GTI vs. Mk7 GTI: A Generational Leap
The Mk8 GTI significantly improves upon the already excellent Mk7, especially in handling. The newer model feels noticeably more planted and agile, with sharper turn-in and impressive grip, even on stock all-season tires. We anticipate even better performance with our planned upgrade to lightweight wheels and Michelin PS4S summer tires.
Power and Performance: A Noticeable Upgrade
The Mk8 GTI’s engine delivers abundant torque throughout the rev range, making for a thrilling driving experience. The exhaust note is more pronounced, adding to the car’s sporty character. The DSG transmission feels refined and seamless, further enhancing the driving experience.
Interior and Technology: Modern and Sleek
The Mk8 GTI boasts a sleek, modern interior with the impressive Virtual Cockpit. While some reviewers criticize the material quality, we found minimal differences compared to the Mk7. The Virtual Cockpit’s configurability and user-friendliness are significant upgrades. While we miss the dedicated climate control buttons of the Mk7, the overall improvements outweigh this minor inconvenience. The infotainment system, though still relatively new to us, has been responsive and intuitive.
Overall Impressions: Exceeding Expectations
The Mk8 GTI has exceeded our expectations. The enhanced driving dynamics, powerful engine, and modern interior make it a compelling package. Even my wife, a self-admitted “non-car person,” raves about the power and handling, claiming it’s the most enjoyable car she’s ever driven. The Mk8’s performance has even sparked my interest in potentially acquiring a Golf R variant. The improved body rigidity also contributes to a more refined driving experience.
This firsthand experience with the Mk8 GTI solidifies its position as a superior successor to the Mk7. It’s a car that impresses both driving enthusiasts and casual drivers alike.
