Mazda Recall Spiders: Yellow Sac Spiders and Fuel Tank Woes

Mazda has issued a recall for 42,000 Mazda6 sedans due to a potential fire risk linked to yellow sac spiders. This isn’t the first time these arachnids have caused trouble for the automaker; a similar recall affecting 52,000 Mazda6 vehicles occurred in 2011. This latest recall targets model years 2010 through 2012.

Why the Mazda Recall for Spiders?

Yellow sac spiders are drawn to the hydrocarbons present in gasoline and can infiltrate the fuel tank hose. Once inside, they may spin webs that obstruct airflow, potentially leading to cracks in the fuel tank and a subsequent fire hazard. While Mazda hasn’t received reports of fires related to this issue, the recall is a proactive measure to address the potential risk.

Mazda’s Solution to the Spider Problem

In response to the initial 2011 recall for 2009 and 2010 models, Mazda engineered a spring designed to deter spiders from entering the fuel tank hose. Additionally, a software update was developed to alleviate pressure on the fuel tank, further mitigating the risk of cracking. While the 2011 recall addressed both the spring and software installation, newer vehicles manufactured between 2010 and 2012 received only the spring.

After receiving nine customer reports of cracked fuel tanks in these later models, Mazda decided to issue the current recall to install the crucial software update. Mazda6 models produced more recently already have both the protective spring and software installed at the factory.

What Mazda Owners Should Do

Mazda owners affected by this recall can schedule an appointment with their local dealership starting this month to have the software update installed free of charge.

Yellow Sac Spiders: A Common Culprit

Yellow sac spiders are a prevalent species throughout the United States, making this recall particularly relevant for Mazda owners in various regions. While this specific issue might seem unusual, it highlights the importance of addressing even seemingly minor factors that could compromise vehicle safety. Mazda’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to ensuring the well-being of its customers.
