A Toyota GR Corolla’s engine caught fire while driving at 85 mph on a North Carolina highway, leading to a dispute between the owner and Toyota regarding warranty coverage. Dashcam footage captured the incident, showing smoke filling the cabin before the car was engulfed in flames.
Toyota’s investigation concluded that the high speed and potentially inadequate tires were responsible for the fire, denying the owner’s warranty claim. The manufacturer cited the owner’s manual, which advises against exceeding 85 mph without “high-speed capability tires,” and pointed to a previous accident reported on the vehicle’s Carfax.
GR Corolla Engine Fire at 85 mph: A Closer Look
The incident unfolded in June 2024 when the GR Corolla owner was driving at approximately 85 mph. The engine suddenly failed, emitting white smoke inside the cabin and black smoke from the exhaust. The driver pulled over and contacted emergency services, but the fire quickly consumed the front half of the vehicle.
A subsequent inspection by a fire inspector revealed a small hole in the engine block’s upper side, along with oil residue on the turbocharger, engine bottom, undercarriage, and exhaust pipes. This damage, coupled with the vehicle’s speed, led Toyota to deny responsibility.

Toyota’s Response and the Tire Controversy
Toyota’s official response reiterated the owner’s manual warning about exceeding 85 mph without appropriate tires. They stated that driving at such speeds without high-speed capable tires could lead to tire failure, loss of control, and potential injury. Based on their inspection and the circumstances, they declined to offer assistance.
However, the GR Corolla is factory-equipped with Michelin tires rated significantly above 85 mph. Tires rated below that speed are typically found on trailers or spare tires, making Toyota’s claim puzzling. Most standard passenger vehicles utilize S or T-rated tires, safe up to 112 mph and 118 mph, respectively. Even basic winter tires are rated for speeds up to 99 mph.
Unanswered Questions and Ongoing Investigation
The owner is currently seeking clarification on the type of tires fitted on the vehicle at the time of the incident. This information could be crucial in determining whether the tires played a role in the engine fire. The investigation continues, leaving questions unanswered regarding the true cause of the fire and Toyota’s responsibility.
The incident highlights the importance of understanding vehicle limitations and adhering to manufacturer guidelines. While the GR Corolla is designed for performance, exceeding recommended speeds, even within legal limits, could potentially lead to unforeseen consequences.
