The E38 M3: A Dream and a 1998 BMW 740i Project

Last week, I joined the ranks of BMW owners with a 1998 E38 740i. While my ultimate goal remains an E38 M3 (a dream for many enthusiasts, though never actually produced), this 740i in Schwarz Black with a Tan interior presents a compelling project. With just over 160,000 miles, it promises a blend of classic luxury and engaging restoration.

The previous owner, a vintage BMW enthusiast, maintained the car meticulously. The interior remains in excellent condition, even boasting the original first aid kit. Key maintenance performed includes: power steering fluid change, new Michelin tires, O2 sensor replacement, new battery, catalytic converter replacement, timing chain guides and belts replaced 55,000 miles ago, and front strut/rear shock replacements.

Upgrades include a Viper alarm system, a Pioneer audio system with infotainment and subwoofer, and a backup camera. While functional, the aftermarket additions reflect a mid-2010s aesthetic that might require updating for a more period-correct look.

Addressing the Mechanical and Cosmetic Challenges of E38 Ownership

The driving experience has been smooth and comfortable, a testament to the E38’s enduring appeal. However, some mechanical and cosmetic issues demand attention.

Mechanical Issues

Initially, the car emitted significant white smoke on idle and startup. Replacing the PCV valve resolved this issue.

The ABS light indicates a faulty sensor requiring replacement. The check engine light, coupled with rough idling, intermittent shuddering, and occasional stalling, points towards a potential camshaft position sensor failure. A cracked air intake boot hose, since replaced, might have contributed to these issues. An oil and filter change has been completed.

Cosmetic Imperfections

The foggy headlights have been restored to near-new condition using a restoration kit.

A burnt-out driver-side headlight bulb needs replacing. A cracked left grille insert necessitates a full grille and chrome surround replacement. The center dash cupholder is inoperable. The upper body requires a paint buff, and the glove compartment latch is broken (currently nailed shut).

The Road Ahead for this E38 740i

This 740i project offers a unique opportunity to experience the joys and challenges of E38 ownership. While the E38 M3 remains a distant aspiration, revitalizing this 740i promises a rewarding journey. Future updates will document the progress of this project, from addressing the remaining mechanical issues to tackling the cosmetic imperfections. The goal is to restore this classic BMW to its former glory, ensuring it continues to grace the roads for years to come. Any advice from fellow E38 enthusiasts is welcomed.
