Choosing between a BMW E30 and E36 can be tough. Both are iconic, offering a unique driving experience. Having owned an E30 325is, a 97 M3, and extensively driven an E36 325is, I can offer insights to help you decide.
The E30, particularly the 325is, boasts a nimble, “flingable” nature, reminiscent of the E21 but improved in every aspect. It comfortably accommodates four people and their belongings. Its smaller size contributes to its tossable handling characteristics. The E36 provides a different feel; more refined and stable, with its smooth inline-6 engine highlighting the BMW lineage. Both models are known for occasional warning lights, and the E36 can present interior challenges that, while fixable, can be quite annoying. Expect bushing replacements on both.
The E36 offers a more refined, comfortable, and stable ride compared to the E30. However, maintaining its pristine condition, especially the interior, requires consistent effort. Neglect can lead to noticeable degradation. It’s important to distinguish between the E36 325is and the E36 M3. The 325is leans towards a comfortable “sporting” experience with moderate power delivery, while the M3 is a true driver’s car, boasting a firmer ride, sharper handling, and significantly more power. If possible, consider the E36 M3; its current market value offers exceptional value for a truly rewarding driving experience. Despite its 240hp rating, the E36 M3 performs with surprising speed.
Given similarly maintained vehicles, an E30 325i would be my preference over an E36, unless an E36 M3 is within reach. For daily driving, the E36 M3 surpasses any E30, including the E30 M3. The E30 M3 excels as a dedicated track car, but its high price and less-than-ideal street manners make it less practical for everyday use.
Finally, both the E30 and E36 are known for their straightforward mechanics. Their well-built construction and logical layout make them relatively easy to work on.
