Cube Scion: Nissan’s Boxy Challenger to the Scion xB

Nissan is bringing its uniquely styled Cube to the U.S. market, aiming to compete with established boxy icons like the Scion xB, Honda Fit, and Toyota Yaris. While not the current model, a redesigned 2009 Cube is slated for American shores. This move comes on the heels of Nissan’s smaller Versa’s success, outselling all but the Toyota Yaris in its class.

Nissan Cube: Design and Target Audience

Nissan’s senior vice president of design, Shiro Nakamura, assures the U.S. Cube will mirror the Japanese version, retaining its distinctive boxy aesthetic. Minor adjustments are possible, but the overall shape, reminiscent of the Scion xB and Honda Element, will remain. Nissan believes this design will resonate with American buyers.

Unlike the Scion xB, which Nissan perceives as having a “young, macho-dude” image, the Cube is being marketed as “gender-neutral.” Nissan hopes to attract a broader audience, particularly females, who have embraced the Cube’s customizable “cute factor” in Japan. This presents an opportunity for the aftermarket parts industry, mirroring the trend seen with other small cars popular among young drivers.

Cube Scion: Aftermarket Potential and VIP Style

The current Cube, available since 2002, has already generated buzz online among U.S. enthusiasts. The upcoming release is expected to spark a wave of personalization, particularly in the “VIP-style” modification scene. This style emphasizes luxury, comfort, and stylish enhancements.

Several Japanese tuners are already offering modification packages for the Cube, showcasing potential customization directions.

Kenstyle, a SEMA member, provides a comprehensive body kit that enhances the Cube’s already unique lines, giving it a more aggressive and sporty appearance. This kit includes front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and a roof spoiler.

Impul offers a sportier take on the Cube with modifications focused on performance and handling. Their offerings include upgraded suspension components, performance exhaust systems, and aerodynamic enhancements.

Wald focuses on luxury, offering exterior modifications that exude elegance and sophistication. Chrome accents, custom grilles, and larger wheels are typical of their style.

Gialla offers a more aggressive and bold styling package for the Cube. Wide body kits, large spoilers, and unique lighting modifications are hallmarks of their designs.

The arrival of the Cube Scion promises a fresh contender in the small car segment, appealing to a wide range of buyers seeking individuality and customization options.
