Removing and Painting C Pillars: A Comprehensive Guide

C Pillars, those structural supports at the rear of your car, are often hidden beneath interior trim panels. Accessing them for repairs or customization can be tricky. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to removing and painting your car’s C pillar trim panels.

First, locate the two screws beneath the hatch edge that secure the trim panel to the C pillar. There’s also a small bolt under the rear speaker shelf that attaches to a triangular section of the trim. Remove all three fasteners. Next, you’ll encounter plastic clips holding the trim panel in place. These clips require careful handling to avoid breakage. The trim panels need to be slid either up or down along the C pillar, depending on which side of the vehicle you’re working on, to disengage them from these clips.

Replacement clips can be ordered from Mitsubishi dealerships or possibly sourced from online parts catalogs like StarQuest Garage. Standard auto parts stores may not carry these specific clips.

Once the trim panels are removed, you can refinish them. A popular option is a black wrinkle finish paint, which provides a durable and textured surface. This type of paint is often used on other interior trim pieces for a consistent look.

The back of the trim panels have slots designed for the clips to slide into. Note the orientation of these slots, as they determine the direction in which the panel must be slid for removal. The driver’s side panel typically slides upward towards the roof.

Conversely, the passenger side panel usually slides downward towards the rear spoiler. Using a trim removal tool to pry the panels off risks damaging the slots. Repairing broken slots often requires spot welding.

Reinstallation is simplified by first inserting the plastic clips into the trim panel slots. Then, align the panel with the C pillar and snap it into place. Finally, secure the panel with the screws and bolt. This method avoids the difficulty of simultaneously aligning the panel with all three clips while sliding it along the C pillar. Remember to handle the clips with care during both removal and installation to prevent breakage. With patience and attention to detail, you can successfully remove, paint, and reinstall your C pillar trim panels for a refreshed interior look.
