Alpine CDA-9857: A Comprehensive Review

The Alpine CDA-9857 car stereo, while not visually striking, offers a robust platform for expanding your car audio system. Its AI-Net interface allows seamless integration with other Alpine components, making it a versatile choice for audio enthusiasts. This review delves into the features, performance, and expandability of the Alpine CDA-9857.

Expanding Upon the Basics: AI-Net and iPod Integration

The CDA-9857 boasts an AI-Net interface and dedicated iPod connectivity, significantly enhancing its expandability. In our testing, we integrated the KCT-100BT Bluetooth module and the KCE-422i Full Speed cable for iPod connection. While lacking built-in auxiliary or USB inputs, the AI-Net interface allows for the addition of these features, showcasing the unit’s adaptability. The head unit itself is a single-DIN design with a single CD slot compatible with MP3 and WMA discs. Navigating MP3 CDs and iPods proved intuitive and user-friendly. The Bluetooth module’s A2DP functionality, enabling wireless music streaming from a cell phone, was particularly impressive.

The CDA-9857 allows for navigation by album, artist, song, or playlist when connected to an iPod.

Navigating the Interface and Controls

The CDA-9857 features a two-line monotone display, a retractable volume/selection knob, and clearly defined navigation and function buttons. The CD slot is located behind a flip-down faceplate, a common design in aftermarket car stereos. The faceplate feels sturdy and is easily removable for security. Three buttons to the left of the volume knob control music source searches, working in conjunction with the rotary selection knob. This setup is particularly effective for navigating extensive music libraries. Six illuminated buttons to the right handle standard functions like play, skip, source selection, and menu access.

Connectivity and Expansion: Bluetooth and Beyond

The KCE-422i iPod cable utilizes a dedicated plug on the rear of the head unit, requiring careful installation planning. Similarly, the KCT-100BT Bluetooth module connects to the rear and presents a slightly more complex installation due to its separate components: a black box with a blue LED indicator, a wired remote, and a microphone. The module’s visible placement within the car cabin might be considered a drawback aesthetically. The CDA-9857 provides four speaker outputs with 18 watts per channel and includes three sets of RCA jacks for connecting to external amplifiers.

The quick search feature allows users to rapidly scroll through all tracks on a CD or iPod.

Performance and Sound Quality: Streaming and Customization

A2DP streaming from a cell phone, facilitated by the KCT-100BT Bluetooth module, was a highlight. Testing with a Sony Ericsson K790A phone demonstrated seamless hands-free calling and high-quality music streaming. Control integration allowed for using the head unit’s preset buttons to control playback on the phone. The CDA-9857’s single CD slot handles standard, MP3, and WMA discs, with the display clearly presenting song information. A quick-search feature allows for rapid browsing of tracks. iPod navigation offered more granular control than CD navigation, enabling browsing by artist, album, song, or playlist. The unit includes customization options for sound levels, display settings, and even allows for inputting a birthday for a personalized message.

Conclusion: A Solid Foundation for Car Audio

The Alpine CDA-9857 stands as a capable and expandable car stereo. Its strength lies in its connectivity options and seamless integration with other Alpine components. While some features are standard, its build quality and intuitive navigation interface are commendable. The lack of front-panel inputs is a minor drawback, but the expandable nature of the unit compensates for this. The KCE-422i iPod cable provides excellent integration, while the KCT-100BT Bluetooth module, although slightly cumbersome to install, delivers solid performance. Overall, the Alpine CDA-9857 provides a solid foundation for a comprehensive car audio system.
