The Abarth and Fiat versions of the iconic small car share the same engine, but the Abarth boasts a performance edge. This difference primarily comes from an ECU tune, resulting in a slight horsepower increase (less than 10 hp) for the Abarth. Beyond the ECU tune, the Abarth features performance-enhancing components like a strut brace, a limited-slip differential, and Bilstein shocks. Depending on the specific Abarth model and trim level, upgrades can also include Brembo front brake calipers and various cosmetic enhancements.
Significant regional differences exist in how Abarth is positioned and equipped. In the UK and Europe, Abarth is marketed as a distinct premium brand, justifying a substantial price premium over the Fiat counterpart when new. This premium also came with a more significant power difference, with the Fiat offering 140 hp compared to the Abarth’s 170 hp, along with the signature Record Monza exhaust.
In the Americas, where Fiat had recently re-entered the market after a long absence, Abarth was less established and treated as a trim level rather than a separate brand. This resulted in a smaller price difference and fewer performance enhancements. Initially, American Abarth models lacked features like the Record Monza exhaust and distinctive Abarth badging. In Australia, only the Abarth version was available.
Despite the performance and branding variations, the core engine remains identical between the Fiat and Abarth. Both share the same fundamental components, including pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, inlet and exhaust manifolds, turbocharger, and intercooler.
Distinguishing the Abarth visually are unique front and rear bumpers, a different front grille, and distinct colors for the windscreen surround and rollover hoop covers. Other Abarth-specific styling cues include the optional “heritage stripe” (available in matte black paint or wrap), a red background tachometer, unique seat and interior trim options, and different wheel designs. In the US, the Abarth also features different rear side marker lights.
