The BMW E30 M3 is a legend, but the rarest E30 is actually the South African 333i. This unique model, nicknamed the “Triple Three,” boasts a fascinating history and impressive performance that surpasses the M3 in certain aspects.
A Unique Origin Story: Born from Racing Aspirations
The 333i was conceived for South African Group 1 racing to compete against local favorites like the Ford Sierra XR8 and Alfa Romeo GTV 3.0. When the series was canceled in 1985, BMW South Africa, feeling left out of the E30 M3 fun, collaborated with Alpina to create a high-performance E30 tailored to the South African market.
The Heart of a Beast: The M30B32 Engine
The 333i’s power comes from the formidable M30B32 engine, typically found in larger BMW models like the 533i and 733i. Alpina contributed custom intake and exhaust manifolds, a high-capacity radiator, and modifications to the Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system. This resulted in an impressive 194hp at 5,500rpm and 295Nm of torque at 4,300rpm, providing significant low-end power.
Alpina’s Influence: Engineering Prowess
Alpina’s expertise is evident in the 333i’s performance enhancements. Their choice of the M30 engine, already proven in Alpina’s own models, showcases their confidence in its potential. The tight fit of the larger engine in the E30’s engine bay led to a unique compromise: buyers could choose either air conditioning or power steering, but not both. Models with power steering featured driving lights in the front bumper, while those with air conditioning had vented grille covers.
Performance and Handling: A True Driver’s Car
Beyond the engine, the 333i received a Getrag close-ratio 5-speed manual gearbox, a limited-slip differential from ZF, and Alpina’s 296mm vented and grooved front discs. This combination, along with Bilstein gas dampers and stiffer springs, resulted in a 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 142mph.
Distinctive Styling: Subtle yet Sporty
The 333i’s exterior featured the M-Technic 1 aerodynamics package and 16-inch Alpina wheels with Pirelli tires. Color options included Henna Red, Ice White, Diamond Black, and the coveted Aero Silver.
A Rare and Coveted Classic: The 333i’s Legacy
With only 204 units sold between 1985 and 1987, the 333i remains a highly sought-after collector’s car. Its unique blend of BMW engineering and Alpina tuning, combined with its South African heritage, makes it a truly special vehicle in the E30 lineage.
More Than an Imposter: A South African Icon
The 333i is not just an M3 substitute; it’s a unique performance car with its own distinct character and a significant place in South African automotive history. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity and passion for performance that defines the BMW and Alpina brands. The 333i is a true South African icon.
