The 1976 Ford Econoline Van, a symbol of freedom and customization, holds a special place in automotive history. This article chronicles the build of an AMT 1976 Ford Econoline “Disco Van” model kit, offering a glimpse into the unique features of this iconic vehicle and the joys of model building. The kit, unearthed after decades in storage, presented a unique opportunity to recreate a piece of 70s van culture.
Recreating a Classic: The AMT 1976 Ford Econoline Disco Van Kit
This specific AMT kit provides all the necessary components to construct a standard E150 Econoline van model. However, what sets this kit apart is an additional sprue packed with period-specific customization options reminiscent of the vibrant vanning scene of the 1970s. These extras include rear window louvers, simulated wood-grain bumpers, and a prominent chrome FORD front grille emblem, instantly transforming the model into the quintessential “Disco Van.”
The original decals, remarkably well-preserved, were treated with a coat of Testors decal sealer before application to prevent cracking. While one stripe decal required minor repair, the rest remained intact, adding authenticity to the 1976 Ford Econoline van model. The build process included an attempt to detail the Ford Windsor small block engine and engine bay. While much of this detail work is hidden within the van’s cabin, some elements like the battery and master cylinder are visible near the firewall.
To further personalize the model, a custom 1978 Florida license plate was crafted using a scaled-down image found online. The model was finished in Testors Diamond Dust paint straight from the can, followed by wet sanding, polishing, and a final coat of high-gloss clear coat to replicate the box art. The finished model embodies the spirit of the 1976 Ford Econoline, capturing its distinctive design and customization potential.
While the builder expressed some dissatisfaction with the model’s stance, the overall result is a satisfying tribute to this classic van. The project highlights the enduring appeal of the 1976 Ford Econoline van and the nostalgic pleasure of model building. Building this kit offered a journey back to the 70s, a time when customizing vans was a form of self-expression and the open road beckoned.
