BMW Scanner 1.4.0: A Hands-On Review for BMW DIY Diagnostics

For BMW owners keen on taking control of their car maintenance, diagnostic tools are invaluable. The Bmw Scanner Car Diagnostic Tool Version 1.4 0 is a budget-friendly option that promises to unlock access to your BMW’s onboard computer for fault diagnosis, coding, and more. Having put this scanner through its paces, here’s a detailed review to help you decide if it’s the right tool for your needs.

Unboxing the BMW Scanner 1.4.0

The scanner arrives in very basic packaging – a simple pouch containing the diagnostic tool itself, a connection cable with an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) connector on one end and a USB port on the other, and a mini CD for software installation.

While the inclusion of a software CD is standard, it’s generally recommended to download the latest software versions from online sources for better compatibility and features.

First Impressions: Build Quality and Handling

Upon initial inspection, the BMW Scanner 1.4 0 does feel somewhat flimsy. The plastic casing doesn’t exude robustness, and it’s clear this isn’t a tool designed for heavy-duty professional use. One practical concern immediately became apparent when testing it on a BMW X3 (E83). The OBD-II port location in this model, near the driver’s door, meant that closing the door fully with the scanner plugged in would put undue stress on the unit and the OBD port itself. Careful handling is definitely required to avoid damage.

However, despite the less-than-rugged build, the OBD connector itself fits snugly and securely into the car’s OBD port. Contrary to some online claims suggesting the need for pin modifications, our unit worked directly out of the box without any such adjustments.

Vehicle Compatibility: BMW E-Series Focus

The product specifications, often quoted from sources like Amazon, list compatibility with “BMW E38, E39, E46, E53, E83, E85 and etc.” The “and etc.” is vague and unhelpful, raising questions about the true range of supported models. While it successfully connected to our E83 test vehicle, and is expected to work with E85 models, the compatibility beyond these E-series BMWs is uncertain.

Our experience attempting to use the BMW Scanner 1.4 0 on a 2017 Mini Countryman was unsuccessful. This suggests that while it’s designed for BMW vehicles, its compatibility is likely limited to older models within the E-series range and may not extend to newer BMWs or even related brands like Mini. Therefore, if you own a BMW outside of the specified E-series, or a newer model, purchasing this scanner carries a compatibility risk.

Software Installation and Setup

The mini CD included with the BMW Scanner 1.4 0 is packed with software. The documentation advises installation on a Windows XP machine, which is quite outdated. While some users report success with Windows 10, our attempts on a Windows 10 system were unsuccessful. However, installation on a readily available Windows XP machine proved straightforward.

Navigating the numerous software files on the CD can be initially confusing. However, the simplest and most effective installation method was found within the “README.TXT” file. This file directs users to download the latest drivers and software online. Crucially, it highlights a specific driver installation sequence:

  1. Plug the scanner into the car’s OBD port.
  2. Wait approximately five seconds (or until the green light on the scanner stops blinking).
  3. Then, install the drivers on your computer.

Following these steps correctly is essential for successful driver installation. Once completed, a program icon will appear on your desktop, ready to launch the diagnostic software.

Conclusion: A Budget Tool for Specific BMW Models

The BMW Scanner car diagnostic tool version 1.4 0 offers a low-cost entry point into BMW DIY diagnostics. It can be a useful tool for owners of older E-series BMW models who want to read fault codes, perform basic coding, and gain a better understanding of their vehicle’s systems.

However, potential buyers should be aware of its limitations:

  • Build Quality: The scanner is not robust and requires careful handling.
  • Limited Compatibility: Officially supports E38, E39, E46, E53, E83, E85 BMWs, with uncertain compatibility beyond these. Not suitable for newer BMWs or Mini models.
  • Software Installation: Best suited for Windows XP, with potential challenges on newer operating systems.

Despite these drawbacks, for its specific target audience of E-series BMW owners comfortable with DIY car maintenance and using older software, the BMW Scanner 1.4 0 can be a worthwhile investment. Just be sure to manage expectations regarding build quality and compatibility before purchasing.
