Understanding VIN Numbers

While Carbly simplifies VIN decoding, understanding the structure of a VIN can be beneficial. The VIN reveals a wealth of information about a vehicle, broken down into distinct segments.

Decoding the VIN: Country of Origin

The very first digit of the VIN indicates the country where the vehicle was manufactured. In some instances, the second digit also contributes to country identification. Here’s a glimpse at some common country codes:

  • United States: 1, 4, 5
  • Canada: 2
  • Mexico: 3
  • Australia: 6A-6W
  • Japan: J
  • Korea: K
  • UK: SA-SM
  • France: VF-VR
  • Switzerland: T
  • Germany: SN-ST, W
  • Sweden: YS-YW
  • Spain: VS-VW
  • Italy: Z

Manufacturer Identification

The second and third digits of the VIN pinpoint the vehicle’s manufacturer. Here are a few examples of manufacturer codes:

  • Audi: AU, A1
  • BMW: BA, BS, BW, BY, US
  • Buick: G4
  • Dodge: B3
  • Chevrolet: G1
  • Chrysler: C3, C4, C6
  • Ferrari: FF
  • Fiat: FA
  • Ford: FA, FB, FC, FD, FM
  • Honda: 1H, JH
  • Hyundai: KM
  • Jaguar: AJ
  • Jeep: J4, J8
  • Lamborghini: HW
  • Land Rover: AL
  • Lotus: CC
  • Mazda: MZ, 4F
  • Mercedes: DB
  • Mitsubishi: MB, MY
  • Nissan: JN
  • Porsche: P0, P1
  • Toyota: JT
  • Volkswagen: VW
  • Volvo: V1, V2, V3, V4

Vehicle Attributes: Brand, Engine, and Type

Positions four through eight of the VIN detail specific vehicle characteristics and configuration.

VIN Check Digit

The ninth digit serves as a crucial check digit for VIN validation. This is especially useful for computerized systems to confirm the VIN has been read accurately.

Model Year Indication

The tenth position in the VIN denotes the vehicle’s model year, starting with ‘A’ for 1980 and progressing alphabetically.

Assembly Plant Identifier

Position eleven is used by manufacturers to specify the particular assembly plant where the vehicle was produced.

Unique Serial Number

The final six digits of the VIN constitute a unique serial number, distinctly identifying each individual vehicle.

Carbly’s Barcode Scanner For Cars, compatible with both iPhone and Android, instantly reads and decodes VIN barcodes. Common Locations to Find Your Car’s VIN

The most common location for your VIN is visible from outside the vehicle. Look at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side. You should be able to see a small metal plate on the dashboard displaying the VIN, and potentially a barcode, through the glass.

If the VIN isn’t visible there (or you only see a barcode), check the driver’s side doorjamb when you open the door. The VIN is often located on a sticker alongside tire pressure and weight information.

Another place to check is the driver’s side door itself, near the door latch. Sometimes the VIN is located here.

Lastly, if you cannot locate the VIN on the vehicle itself, you can always find it on your vehicle insurance documents or your vehicle title.
